Bas Group Reconfirms their Trust in Trimble On-board Computers for its Transport and Logistics Operations

The Bas Group will equip 30 new trucks with Trimble’s FleetXPS and Truck4U solutions for its transport and logistics operations. With FleetXPS, drivers use a mobile device that can be used for proof of delivery, barcode scanning and damage registration, while the Truck4U fixed on-board computer enables driving style analysis. For the Bas Group, this investment means getting acquainted with Trimble again, after seven years. Lorenzo Bas, Chief Operations Officer said: "We specifically looked for a supplier whose vision and approach are most in line with ours."

Seven years ago, the Bas Group worked with ICS Truck Black Box (acquired by Punch Telematix, which is now currently Trimble Transport & Logistics). In 2008, Bas decided to invest in a new transport management system and on-board computers, but the choice wasn’t ideal. In 2013, a new process was launched where Trimble was selected. "Like our company, Trimble has a flat organization with short lines allowing them to operate in a very service-oriented way. I also found the maintenance contract very appealing. It means no more hourly fees for each separate service instance, but a monthly fee that covers all maintenance costs," said Bas.

Proof of Delivery with FleetXPS

Two years ago, the Bas Group installed the familiar CarCube, while awaiting the new mobile solution, Trimble FleetXPS. With FleetXPS available now, the logistics service provider will install the solution in every new vehicle in combination with Truck4U, a fixed on-board computer without a display.

FleetXPS supports a large part of the familiar on-board computer functions, such as communication between planners and drivers, follow-up of planned trips, registration of worked hours and truck navigation. In addition, the on-board computer includes an integrated barcode scanner and camera. The camera enables the driver to record any damage or to use pictures to prove that seals have not been broken. The barcode scanner makes it possible to scan the pallet label at delivery. And with the possibility to receive a signature on the display from the recipient, the logistics service provider has a proof of delivery, which can directly be sent to the customer." With this computer, we are prepared for the digital CMR," said Bas.

Driving Style Analysis with Truck4U

Truck4U is a fixed on-board computer without a display. It uses a tachograph and CANbus link for monitoring driving times and for reading engine management data. Using this data, it is possible to analyze the driving habits in real-time and to give drivers feedback via the FleetXPS display. "This data will also be used in Driver Plus, our in-house driver training program," says Bas.

Both on-board computers will be linked with Winsped, the transport management system with integrated planning system Winsped from LIS. Eventually, all hundred trucks from both Bas Logistics and Hereijgers, the two transport divisions within the Bas Group, will be equipped with FleetXPS and Truck4U. "Both divisions are now run via the same IT platform. This gives us the flexibility to schedule all our trucks for both divisions," says Bas.

Growing without Enlarging

The investment in FleetXPS and Truck4U comes shortly after two other major investments made by the Bas Group: the investment in an office, warehouse and cross dock space in Etten-Leur and the purchase of a new transport and warehouse management system. Lorenzo Bas: "It is now time to optimize our processes with these systems. Only then we will achieve our ultimate goal: to grow without having to invest in additional people. Last year, our turnover has grown from 28 to 30 million euros. This year the figures are good so far. Hopefully the growth will continue. In any case, we are ready for it."
